Talking About Army Background

This image comes from Tears of Istvaan, a blog that showcases a lot of beautiful and creepy art and some fantastic models. You can find it in my roll off to the right there.

Pretty soon the Invasion of St. Arkham campaign will finally come to an end, in a huge Apocalypse battle.  Because of this, I thought today I’d post up some brief background I’ve worked up for my Warhammer 40k collection.

I’m not really one for writing up encyclopeadic histories for my armies, but I do enjoy mentally placing them in the setting, and it’s about time I wrote down my floating thoughts seeing as I have a blog and all.  Speaking of that, sorry I seem to have stopped putting up many pictures lately – I’m very busy these days and don’t have much time to trawl for non-essential images unfortunately.

Anyway.  I think there are at least two ways to enjoy the background of the games we love.  One is what I call the historical approach, where you accurately re-create elements of the background.  I call it the historical approach because this is what historical gamers usually do.  They give their soldiers all the accurate insignia and details so that when the army is arrayed it becomes a realistic tableau of retreating Russian infantry at Stalingrad or whatever.

People can do this with 40k too.  The GW games have such well-established background that you can make an army that is, say, an accurate depiction of the Ultramarines 4th company during the Tyrannic Wars, or the Thousand Sons in the 31st millennium.  I can definitely see the fun and the challenge in that.

The other main approach (which is the one I just can’t seem to avoid taking), could be called the inventive approach.  This is where you invent your own take on an army, for example making up your own chapter of space marines or unique Ork warband.  The challenge is to make it fit into the established setting in a way that is believable and makes people say “hey that’s pretty cool.”  There is obviously limited scope for this in historical gaming – although I know that the inimitable SinSynn at House of Paincakes has aliens in his Flames of War army.  And that warms my heart.

So, I normally engage with the setting inventively, not historically.  Below, if you’re interested, you can read the little bits of lore I have invented over the last few years to get my imagination going between games.

At the close of the invasion, several small skirmishes took place as the defending troops fell back toward the Governor’s fortress.  Lt. Col. Khazak of the Cadian 121st set a series of booby traps to the west of St. Arkham Cathedral to catch the Ultramarines off-guard and draw them into the open, but a breakdown in communications led to some elements of battlegroup Wyvern blundering into the area and mistaking the trapped ordnance for valuable salvage.  The Ultramarines took advantage of the confusion to rout the misdirected Imperial Guard.  Lord Felix Bock, ranking commissariat officer of battlegroup Wyvern, was severely wounded in the engagement by the famous Ultramarine marksman Telion.

It’s getting towards the end of the campaign.  In fact, the war is all but over and all that remains is the huge Apocalypse bang that every good campaign needs to go out with.  As you can see Jay and I both took unusual lists, to reflect the fact that this was a skirmish involving forward elements.  There were certainly a lot of Ultramarine scouts staring me down.  I really liked the look of this mission, as I love random brutality that ruins careful planning and makes you have to think on your feet.  Unfortunately, I got what I wished for with this one!

We decided to alter the mission so that both attacker and defender could trigger the explosions.  As luck would have it, most of the objectives I grabbed either exploded or were false objectives, and Jay managed, by the end of the game, to seize all the real ones and avoid getting blown up, all the while playing with a points penalty from last game.  Basically I got totally smashed.  It was one of those games where luck was against me all the way, I just couldn’t roll to save my guy’s lives.  Sort of like what happened to Jay way back in Part IV, so it all evened out over time at least . . .

The main horror I remember was my Lord Commissar and Ogryns charging a squad of scouts and being killed without causing a single casualty.  The best thing that happened for me was my sharpshooter lascannon team exploded one of the Ultramarine whirlwinds on the first shot of the game.  It was all downhill from there.  Jay played a tight game and just sort of swept my guys away, taking the objectives as he went.  After a bit of back and forth, the marines now have a clear lead on campaign points.

Things have been really busy in real life lately (I’m starting to wonder if they’ll ever not be), so it might be a little while until the final battle.  Stay tuned though . . . there’ll be at least one Titan, and some special rules my opponent cooked up. I’ll make sure to break it into a few parts for easier reading.

Result: Space Marine major victory.  Ultramarines 20 points, battlegroup Wyvern 12 points.

At last, battle eight of the Invasion of St. Arkham – a 2750 point game.  I had trouble getting my list together this time because I ran out of models and points at 2,680 to make up a legal Force Organization Chart.

We thought of a few possibilities: allow me an Apocalypse stratagem, maybe use my new Rangers as sneaky xenos with their own agenda, but eventually we agreed I could just take an extra Elite slot.  After all, the invasion is almost accomplished, so the Arkhamites would be bringing out their last ditch guns.  I filled the slot with a small squad of psykers.

This report may be a little longer than usual because the game was pretty huge (look at my list! It’s as long as my arm).  I’ve tried my best not to waffle on though, and the game was very exciting . . .  Continue reading

“My lord Inquisitor, I’m glad you could join us.”  Lord General Drake bent his knee and bowed his head before the metal giant.  It was for the benefit of the men – he and Borgez had already met last night, when the famous Ordo Hereticus agent had told him that the Ultramarines were refusing even to acknowledge his Inquisitorial rosette.

It was a bad sign.  It meant either that the marines had decided Borgez himself was tainted, or that he was incompetent and had failed to notice heresy on his own doorstep.

The ancient witch hunter’s voice rasped from the vox-cherub built into his battle suit. “We will stop them here Drake.  I guarantee it.”

The mighty cyborg swayed and creaked as the ground shook, drop pods raining down. Borgez’s face remained stony in the huge metal body, his beady eyes sharp and black. Drake made the sign of the Aquila and touched his icon of the Emperor to his mask in silent prayer as Kreig Death Riders cantered past him.

Where were the bloody tanks?

The campaign’s getting down to the wire now.  I made a mistake last time – the mission we played was Implacable Advance not Trench Warfare.  This time it was Trench Warfare, and it was a doozy.  As always, you can check out the campaign we’re playing here at Sign of the Aquila.

This game I finally fielded my counts-as Karamazov in an attempt to repel the marines (hey, 2500 points is a lot!  I need every ridiculous special character I can get). Continue reading

Lord General Drake peered out over the trench lines.  His army had managed to fight the invading Astartes to a standstill here, at great cost to the once-thriving city, and battle had been raging for over a week now.  His men were dug in deep, and the Ultramarines were proving difficult to track.  They performed hit and run attacks on his embattled troops seemingly at random. But now the sky was filled with the dark shape of an astartes battle-barge, and the enemy had collected in enough numbers to be clearly visible to long-range auspex and psyker-augury.

Drake’s ancient power armour, gifted to the founder of his line by the Mechanicus long ago, made him the equal of any astartes in combat.  The huge plates hissed and clanked, and gouts of smoke and steam belched from the valves on his back.  His boots crushed the gravel to powder and he grimly primed his hefty plasma pistol and checked his sabre, reinforced for his augmented strength.  These traitors would regret coming here, to his world, sullying the sacred ground with their heathen filth.

He looked over and nodded to Paxila.  The canoness soared into the air, trailing flame, her white armour gleaming in the gloom. She landed on top of a Sororitas vehicle with an audible clank and raised her flaming power sword.  The men bellowed and cheered at this angelic display.

Drake’s amplified voice crackled over the nearby men and over the vox as drop pods fell like meteors.  “Here they come boys! Let’s throw them back into space!”

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve updated the blog.  I’ve been away at a conference for work, and I didn’t get a chance to prepare this report before I left.  So here, after a long wait, is a return to the Invasion of St. Arkham.  The details will be sparse because this was over a week ago now, but you’ll get the gist (hint: I lost again!) The ground stopped shaking and Captain Harlock picked himself up.  Plaster crumbled from the ceiling of the old basilica that he had converted to a temporary command post.  He picked up his cap and batted the dust off it.  Jenkins and Barrett slowly settled back into their sharpshooting positions, one in the doorway, one at the window. The 44th had dug themselves in.

He knew from the comms net that Khazak had made it to the Lord General’s HQ, and all he had to do now was keep his boys in the fight, hopefully slowing down the Ultramarines until the Lord General arrived.  It wasn’t going to be easy.  Recon reported that the marines had advanced recklessly, apparently enraged by Khazak’s escape.  They were severely outnumbered, but this did not seem to have given them pause.  They came on, battle-barges raining ordnance on the battered town.  They did not hesitate or even seem to realize that they were outgunned.

Harlock began to feel afraid.

We’ve recently had a five-day weekend here in Australia for Easter and Anzac Day, so I’ve managed to cram a few games in.  Jay and I played missions four and five of the Invasion of St. Arkham, followed by an army swap game that I’ll talk about later in the week.

In mission five of our campaign (borrowed from Sign of the Aquila), the Ultramarines were attempting to assault one of battlegroup Wyvern’s fortified bases.  The mission was Prepared Assault from the Battle Missions book, which is a great one.  We’ve actually played it before because Jay and I are both fans of random battle cannon shells hitting our guys.  Because Khazak had escaped last game, the Ultramarines were 250 points down against dug-in guardsmen. Khazak turned and took one last look at the battle raging behind him.  He could see the dark shapes of a pair of leman russ tanks crawling through the dust and smoke, and his earpiece picked up the crackling voices of a platoon of the St. Arkham 44th.  They were advancing to intercept the astartes who were beginning to surround his position.

“Sir?”  The pilot’s voice was tinny inside his imposing full-face helmet.  It was good to hear the Cadian accent.

“Lets go.”  Khazak nodded.  He strode into the roaring Valkyrie, and was met by his old friend Darkon.  The man’s face was grim and his sabre was drawn and held loosely at his side.  Darkon had saved Khazak’s life on many occasions, and had the scars to prove it.

“We’ll get you out of here, sir.  I swear it.  The Lord General will come back and wipe these traitors off the map.”  Khazak closed his eyes and leaned back in the seat.  Were the marines traitors?  It didn’t seem likely.  He supposed that in the end, it didn’t really matter.  It was his duty to get out, to rendezvous with the Lord General, and it would be done.

The other day Jay and I played mission four of our campaign borrowed from Sign of the Aquila.  Since I lost the last game I only had 1000 points to Jay’s 1500, so it wasn’t going to be pretty.  I took a hard list (by my standards anyway) and borrowed Jay’s nicely painted valkyrie for the duration of the battle.

Anathema and Storm Giant advance, supported by the St. Arkham 44th and the Cadian 129th Grenadiers.

Since the mission required that I get my commander off the opposite end of the table, I put him in the flyer with a bodyguard and decided to just go for broke.  The rest of my boys were to function as distractions, hopefully take out the biggest threats to the valkyrie, then assault as much as they could to tie the Ultramarines up while Khazak made his get away.  I deployed on the most thinly covered table end and pushed the valkyrie on with my scout move, then trundled my two MBTs forward supported by my platoon, grenadiers and fire support.  I figured I’d try to refuse as much of the superior marine force as I could by sticking to one side and keeping the terrain between us.
